Freshmen Tie Bedford 0-0; Lose 2-0 to Central

The Marauder opened their season in fine style Friday, outplaying Bedford in the second half before settling for a 0-0 draw on a steamy afternoon at The Pasture.  Haters decry a nil-nil draw, but this match was full of two-way action and close shaves, presaging an exciting season for the 'shmen.

Bedford had a territorial advantage in the first half, but the Hanover defense, anchored by David Wilson, Ben Parrado and Sawyer Hanlon, aided and abetted by Azor Goodwin and Vincent Versteeg, held firm.  Harris LaRock was a standout in goal, and deserved his clean sheet.  His six saves included a few sick ones, and he handled back passes with aplomb, including one that was chest high.

Henry Kahl and Sam Pych were dominant at midfield.  Sam nearly scored on a free kick, sending his shot just over the bar.  Caleb Putnam was a force up front, and in the closing minutes hit a shot squarely off the crossbar.

Both teams played hard but very clean soccer, and achieved the sort of mutual respect which occurs when everyone honors the game.

Hanover jumped right back into the action on Saturday with a morning matinee at Manchester Central.  A strong and deep Central squad scored once in each half to register a 2-0 victory.  The young Marauders nevertheless kept their shape and stayed composed.  Fortified by the second-best ice cream in the state  (First by a mile, according to Caleb Putnam!), Hanover will host Concord on Monday at 4:00 on the hallowed turf of Merriman-Branch Field.
