Junior Varsity Take a Sweet 3-1 Win at Exeter
It was hot on the field, but the small gathering of Hanover fans enjoyed
the shaded bleachers, especially in the second half. Exeter broke in at
the game’s 15-minute mark, on a long, high shot that glanced just over
the outstretched arms of the leaping goalie Harry Olszewski, and Exeter nursed the 1-0 lead through the entire half. Exeter, early on,
like Concord in the previous match, moved the ball a bit too easily
until the group substitutions of predominantly sophomores settled things
and had a couple of good shots that just missed the mark.
Still, we went into the break down a goal, and had not scored. That
was to change.
The second half began with increased Marauder intensity on display, as the midfield of Jack Hazard, Alvaro Cooper, George Geraghty and Casey Starr started and continued making things happen. The game had moved to the Exeter half of the field more often than not. Then, finally, a killer corner kick from Luke Messersmith on the not-so-wide pitch, curled into the goal for the tying goal. From there, a team that seems to ride on emotion and momentum was fired up. Soon thereafter, a series of passes that started on a short defensive clear, led to two sweet feeds, from the feisty Hazard to Starr, who deftly slid an assist to Robbie Murdza filling the space from the right side towards the middle, where he met the pass and fluffed the nets with a strong boot that gave Hanover a lead they would not relinquish. 2 – 1 for the marooned ones.
Later, the deal was sealed when a PK by Sander Macauley came in low and inside the left post with 10 minutes left, which allowed the visitors to exhale and relax. Final score, 3 – 1 Hanover, and the lads went to 2 wins along with 1 heartbreaking loss in this young season. Besides those already mentioned, a fine performance was put in by defensemen Jack Pattison, Lucas Adams-Blackmore, Addison Wanner, Inigo Panos, and others. Especially in the second half, Exeter just could not get through. Along with the outcome of the varsity game just behind our field, it was probably a nice bus ride home together. Bring on the weekend!

Freshmen Tie Bedford 0-0; Lose 2-0 to Central
The Marauder opened their season in fine style Friday, outplaying Bedford in the second half before settling for a 0-0 draw on a steamy afternoon at The Pasture. Haters decry a nil-nil draw, but this match was full of two-way action and close shaves, presaging an exciting season for the 'shmen.
Bedford had a territorial advantage in the first half, but the Hanover defense, anchored by David Wilson, Ben Parrado and Sawyer Hanlon, aided and abetted by Azor Goodwin and Vincent Versteeg, held firm. Harris LaRock was a standout in goal, and deserved his clean sheet. His six saves included a few sick ones, and he handled back passes with aplomb, including one that was chest high.
Henry Kahl and Sam Pych were dominant at midfield. Sam nearly scored on a free kick, sending his shot just over the bar. Caleb Putnam was a force up front, and in the closing minutes hit a shot squarely off the crossbar.
Both teams played hard but very clean soccer, and achieved the sort of mutual respect which occurs when everyone honors the game.
Hanover jumped right back into the action on Saturday with a morning matinee at Manchester Central. A strong and deep Central squad scored once in each half to register a 2-0 victory. The young Marauders nevertheless kept their shape and stayed composed. Fortified by the second-best ice cream in the state (First by a mile, according to Caleb Putnam!), Hanover will host Concord on Monday at 4:00 on the hallowed turf of Merriman-Branch Field.

Hanover Soccer "Goes Orange" To Support The Haven
The Hanover Boys Soccer program is teaming with the Upper Valley Haven to promote
the Haven's "Go Orange With the Haven" project for the month of September.
The Marauder Varsity boys will be wearing orange socks in their home game with Londonderry
on Tuesday, September 9th at 4:00 p.m. and encouraging all players, parents and
spectators to donate non-perishable food items to the Haven's Food Shelf. We are particularly hoping to have full participation by every member of the soccer program. If every player participates, that will mean 100 food items for the Haven!
Home teams in the NHIAA are required to wear all white, but Hanover was given
special permission by the NHIAA to wear orange to highlight their commitment to
the Haven.
"We collected 46 pound of food at our last home game", commented Coach Rob Grabill,
"and when I delivered it to the Haven, I learned about this month's "Go Orange"
promotion, and figured wearing orange at our next few home games would be a nice
way to raise awareness."
"Even if Hanover staff and students don't come to our game on Tuesday, we're hoping
they can support us by beinging a non-perishable food item to school on Tuesday. We'll have collection boxes in the Atrium, right next to Ford's desk at the entrance."
The Haven has also received a challenge grant from an anonymous donor, promising
to match any cash donation for the Food Shelf for the entire month of September.
"Although we are asking staff and students to bring food items, we would be thrilled
to have anyone, including parents, consider making a cash donation to the Haven
Food Shelf, knowing that it would be instantly doubled," said Grabill.
We would also love to have as many players as possible "Go Orange" on Tuesday by wearing anything orange (Dutch national team uniform, Touchline Jersey, prison jumpsuit) to school on Tuesday. Orange is the new Maroon!
JV Loses to Concord 3-2 in Sudden Death OT
On a beautiful afternoon on
the grass at Hanover, the JV team expected a tough game from Concord, and they
got one. They came out attacking, finding space on quick ball passing and fast
runs, shooting a barrage of shots that were off the mark. Then, 10 minutes in, Concord struck paydirt
on a low shot that snuck under the diving Owen Brooks for a quick lead. It looked like it might be a long day for our
Mauraders.
But, two minutes later, Yedne Adkins hustled to run down a long pass
and fought for the ball near the goal where he slid a pass upfield towards Luke
Messersmith, who sent it home to tie the game at 1 – 1. Suddenly, the defense began to stop the
Concord free wheeling attacks, and the momentum had shifted.
The sophomore group entered
at 20 minutes and played organized soccer, moved the ball well with good
passing, and also slowed down the Concord side to allow no real scoring
threats, with Ben Sobel and Lucas Adams-Blackmore playing scrappy defense while
clearing the ball well downfield. The score was 1- 1
at the halftime break.
However, the second half
started with a quick run by Concord up the middle for the go-ahead goal, making
it a one goal deficit. Things were even
from there, with both teams moving the ball up and down the field, while Jack
Hazard, Inigo Panos and the rest of the junior squad kept chances away from the
visitors while the boys in home whites sent some good passes near the box
without any clear shots on net.
Alvaro Cooper led the
sophomore group at midfield, and showed a sportsmanship example when he helped
pick up a Concord player he had just leveled on a hard, clean fight for the
ball. That’s how we aspire to roll in
Hanover, and it showed up throughout the match.
While some visiting players complained about calls to the tune of a
yellow card and a removed player, Hanover made the small but dedicated parent
fan base proud as our boys exemplified playing the game with respect and passion.
Just when the game appeared
destined to end at 2 – 1, Casey Starr threaded a nice assist to Yedne Adkins,
who was a force all day, as he flashed down the middle where he converted in a
crowd, to tie things at 2-2, where it stayed until regular time ended.
The coaches from both teams
approached the referees to request a chance to play on, and the gamble paid off
for Concord when a strong boot from long range ended the sudden death. Game over, 3 – 2, Concord. These two strong JV squads might meet again
come playoff time, and that will be one not to miss.
Next up, 4:00, away at
Exeter. This amateur soccer blogger will
be going. Car pool?

Marauders Beat Concord 2-1 in Semifinal Rematch
The Marauders earned an important early-season victory on Wednesday, beating a physical Concord team 2-1 in a rematch of last year's NHIAA Semifinal. Both teams have been hit hard by graduation losses, and this matchup gave each team the opportunity to show their progress in the rebuilding process. Round one went to Hanover on the strength of two goals by junior Asa Berolzheimer and a good showing by a determined Marauder defense.
Concord followed in the footsteps of Bishop Guertin, last Friday's opponent, by showing up late. Perhaps it's best not to travel to Hanover from Concord via Keene. Both teams had ample time to warm up, and before the crowd had even settled into their seats, Jamie Dinulos had put the ball in the back of the Concord net, heading home a cross from Sam Strohbehn. Somehow, the play was judged to be offsides. Can't wait to see the film. From there the first twenty minutes were a stalemate, with Concord holding a slight territorial edge. Midway through the half, Hanover went to the bench and was ready to sub in Noah Kahan for Dinulos, Seth Stadheim for Sam Strohbehn, and Josh Wallace for Asa Berolzhimer. Hanover earned a corner, and the subs were waved in. "Wait, Josh," said Grabill.
"Asa's been working on these corners. Let him take this." Boom. Goal. Berolzheimer's rocket into the box glanced off a Concord defender and found the back of the net. It was a 1-0 lead that Hanover never lost, and Wallace then happily replaced Asa.
Neither team had many more chances in a half that featured a total of four total shots between the two teams, and 15 fouls. Tim Alibozek his a shot/cross from the right flank that was tipped over the bar by Crimson Tide goalkeeper Andrew Grondin, and burly Concord striker Dylan Thomson hit a hard free kick that squeezed through the Marauder wall and was well-handled by Hanover netminder Konrad Mitchell. Not far from then end of the half, Stadheim was spring on a breakaway and was fouled from behind at the edge of the Concord penalty area. Red card, right? It was yellow instead, and Berolzheimer's resulting free kick went P-Lot.
Unsurprisingly, Hanover gained an edge in play coming out of the break and did a nice job generating some good offensive chances. Ian Caldwell, back in the lineup after sustaining a hard knock in the first half, sailed a hard shot over the bar. Concord's defense bent but didn't break, and so Berolzheimer decided to go over and around them instead of through them, teeing up a long shot that in all likelihood was intended to be a cross. He'll never tell. His high, arching shot from near the right touchline sailed across the face of the goal and amazing clanked off the far upright and went side netting on the other side with 25 minutes to play.
The Marauders managed the match from there, continuing to look for counterattacks as Concord pressed forward. Several offsides penalties negated some good possibilities, but Hanover maintained the necessary composure to withstand some rough play from the visitors, who also were pretty vocal when they thought their rights were being infringed. Neither team distinguished itself in the chirping department, but Hanover's maturity when the going got tough was a decisive factor in the match.
Concord pulled back a goal with less than four minutes to play, with striker Jack Silverstein managing to elude a Marauder defender and push a short shot past Mitchell to ensure a frantic final three minutes. Hanover did a fine job playing out the string, and earned the right to celebrate at the final whistle with a hard-earned win. It wasn't pretty, but it was a result.
"These teams will both be around at the very end of the season." commented Grabill. "It was nice for us to get the win while we're learning on the job, and I like our chance to be the more improved team the next time we see each other." Hanover now has three wins and a draw against Concord since the Marauders promoted themselves to Division One. But it's definitely a rivalry.
There's no rest for the weary Marauders, who take to the road on Friday for a trip to Exeter. The Blue Hawks are a perennial power in Division one, and are the only Division One program to have won three titles in a row, which happened a decade ago. Hanover edged Exeter in overtime last year. Departure time on Friday is 1:05 p.m. Next Tuesday, the Marauders will return home to face Londonderry, another potential top four team.

Busy Week Ahead For the Hanover Teams
There are all sorts of updates and new information herein. Please read carefully, to the bottom!
The Varsity and JV boys will host Concord Wednesday at HHS. (Varsity on the turf, JV on the grass). This is late and not well-publicized, but I would love to have every player bring one non-perishable food item for the Haven. We'll have a collection bin at the top of the turf field driveway, in the chocolate milk location. Small start, but we can build on this.
The Varsity and JV will leave for the Exeter game at 1:05 Friday, missing periods 6 and 7. Players, you MUST contact your teachers tomorrow or Thursday to inform then, and see what work you need to make up. Please be proactive about this. If you want to ride home with your parents after the game, you must give a signed note to the athletic office on the day of the game, have it signed there, and give it to your coach. No note, no ride home. The Exeter kickoff time is now 4:00, not 4:30.
The Freshmen will take their team photo tomorrow after school. Please bring your white home uniforms to school, change after school, and meet on the turf field by 2:20. You can wear your white uniforms to practice, and then wear gold on Thursday, and white again on Friday. You can take the regular practice but to the game on Friday at the Rt. 5 Field.
The Freshmen play Saturday at Manchester Central. The game will be a Livingston Park on the Daniel Webster Highway in Manchester, 3/4 mile south of Exit #9 off 93. Take exit 9 for Rt. 3, go straight through the light, and Livingston Park is on the right. The game is at 10:00. The bus will leave at 7:45 sharp. There will be snacks and drinks for after the game (eat a hearty breakfast). After the game, the team will have a chance to go across the street for ice cream at The Puritan. Their home-made ice cream is the best in the state. Better than Walpole. We recommend the flavor called "Mint Condition". Players should bring $5 for ice cream, and DON'T order a Large cone.
Daniel, Sam and Caleb may order Medium.
The Reserve numbers are excellent. We had a modest 29 today, with several excused absences. We gave out practice jerseys today, and still have several more to hand out tomorrow. We will take the team photo on Thursday. Please wear your practice jersey Thursday, and wear white socks and shorts if you have them. We have some for those who don't.
All players, please continue to work on your hydration during the day, and during and after practice. You should have enough water (or 50-50 water/energy drink) to drink 10-12 ounces immediately after practice. You should then have a high-energy snack with some protein an hour afterwards.
Chocolate milk is great for this. So is ice cream from the Puritan. You should also investigate those Gatorade Protein Whey bars, of a Clif bar.
